Jonathan & Kathy Usher
Camp Grace Small Group Leaders | Powdersville

Our volunteers in the Children’s Ministry come from all stages of life. From parents of grown children to those who are children themselves, we’ve got them all. When newlyweds Jonathan and Kathy Usher started serving as small group leaders for a first-grade boys’ class in Powdersville at the beginning of this school year, they were in the thick of planning their wedding.
Kathy said the children were curious about the progression, and would occasionally ask questions about their relationship.
“That was the most awkward part, answering our class’ questions about why we weren’t already married,” Kathy said.
But there are many more moments that are rewarding and encouraging, such as when they get a peek into how much children have to teach us.
“We don’t have children of our own (yet!), so sometimes we get stumped by the boys in our class,” Kathy said. “We are teaching them about the Bible, but they are teaching us about life!”
The couple said the most rewarding aspect of serving is knowing they are impacting a future generation for Christ.
The couple lives in Easley with two very spoiled cats. Jonathan is a construction manager, and Kathy works on the staff at Grace Church. Husband and wife both enjoy music - Jonathan is a piano player and Kathy plays the flute. Both had served on the Pelham Road campus, in different capacities, before the Powdersville campus was launched in 2008.
“We were a part of the original crew who went from Pelham to help launch the Powdersville campus,” Kathy said. “Interestingly, we never met! Jonathan went back to Pelham after a few months, and I stayed in Powdersville until we met and started dating seriously.”
Jonathan and Kathy were married in January, although things didn’t go quite as planned, thanks to wave after wave of winter weather. The wedding had to be moved up a day, to avoid one winter storm, and as a result, the venue changed from the South Carolina mountains to Grace Church Powdersville.
“God must have wanted us to get married at the church where he had been putting our story together all along,” Kathy said.
The honeymoon was complicated by winter weather, too.
“We went to the South Carolina mountains and got snowed in for a few days, then went to the North Carolina mountains and had to leave early because another storm was coming through,” Kathy said. “So we went west to the Georgia mountains. It was just starting to snow there when it was time to go home.”
